Black Feather White and Silver Teaopt

This teapot is simple and lovely. It holds approximately 20 oz., and measures 6" in height to the top of the lid and 7.5" spout to handle, the opening is 2.75" dia. The spout has straining holes for loose tea and the handle is sturdy. This is just the right size teapot for one, especially if your a slow sipper and you like to keep your tea piping hot, but it can fill my 14 oz. teacups and saucers twice, or my 5 oz. teacups four times.

This piece is wheel-thrown and made of mid-fire porcelain. A bee is screen printed in black on either side of the teapot before the first firing. Each piece is then dipped in clear glaze and fired a second time. Finally, the he lip of the pot and tip of the lid are brushed with gold overglaze and fired a third time.

There’s a wide variety of symbolism associated with feathers. When a feather falls to earth, the Native Americans believe they are gifts from the sky, the sea and the trees. Feathers also represented the power of the thunder gods, along with the power of air and wind.

The Druids wore ornate feathered robes in ceremonies to invoke the sky gods and gain knowledge. Ma'at, the Egyptian goddess of justice, would weigh the hearts of the newly dead in the underworld against the weight of a feather to determine the worthiness of their soul. In Christianity three feathers symbolize charity, hope, and faith.

All my pieces are food safe and areas with metallic overglaze can come into contact with food and drink, but this piece is NOT microwave safe. As with any metallic surface, they could cause sparks. Avoid hard scrubbing when washing because of the possibility of scraping off the thin layer of silver overglaze, it is best to treat these pieces as you would fine china. Although silver overglaze will take repeated washings in a dishwasher, it will eventually wear away, so please hand wash.

This design is part of an open edition collection. The piece pictured IS the piece you will receive. As with most handmade work slight variations are natural.
