Unicorn, Black & Silver Porcelain Small Bowl, Jewelry Dish, Ring Dish, Dipping Bowl

These sweet little bowls are sold alone, but they love to come in pairs. They hold 1 oz. of liquid, perfect for sauces or spices. They also make lovely ring dishes, candle holders, or to just hold nothing and sit quietly. They'd make a treasured gift for a hostess. Each measures approx. 3.5" in dia., and is 3/4” high.

This piece is wheel thrown and made of a mid-fire porcelain. The interior of the cup is painted with black underglaze, and features a unicorn screen printed and hand detailed before the first firing. Each piece is then dipped in clear glaze and fired a second time. Finally, the edge of the cup is brushed with silver overglaze and fired a third time.

Unicorns have a special significance to me. As a little girl I'd spend hours drawing them, my bedroom was decorated with them and I owned every plush unicorn toy ever made (I still have a few).

Unicorns are a symbol of purity, faithfulness and grace, their horns were said to have the power to heal sickness. The Greeks claimed that unicorns could be found in India, and they’re mentioned in several different books in the Bible. During the Renaissance a popular allegory featured a maiden, often representing the Virgin Mary, capturing and taming a unicorn and it remained a popular subject in religious art. DiVinci wrote about unicorns, “The unicorn, through its intemperance and not knowing how to control itself, for the love it bears to fair maidens forgets its ferocity and wildness; and laying aside all fear it will go up to a seated damsel and go to sleep in her lap, and thus the hunters take it.”

All my pieces are food safe and areas with metallic overglaze can come into contact with food and drink, but this piece is NOT microwave safe. As with any metallic surface, they could cause sparks. Avoid hard scrubbing when washing because of the possibility of scraping off the thin layer of silver overglaze, it is best to treat these pieces as you would fine china. Although silver overglaze will take repeated washings in a dishwasher, it will eventually wear away, so please hand wash.

This design is part of an open edition collection. The piece pictured may not necessarily be the piece you receive. As with most handmade work slight variations are natural.

I've had to stop accepting commissions and special orders to focus on designing and making new work. Sorry!
