These sweet little bowls are sold alone, but they love to come in pairs. They hold 1 oz. of liquid, perfect for sauces or spices. They also make lovely ring dishes, candle holders, or to just hold nothing and sit quietly. They'd make a treasured gift for a hostess, bride and groom, or brides maids. Each measures approx. 3.5" in dia., and is 3/4” high.
**If your interested in ordering these in quantity for your wedding or special occasion, please convo me.**
These pieces are wheel thrown and made of a mid-fire porcelain. The interior of the cup features a seahorse, screen printed in black and hand detailed before the first firing. Each piece is then dipped in clear glaze and fired a second time. Finally, the lip of the cup is brushed with silver overglaze and fired a third time.
Seahorses typically mate for life and reinforce their pair bond daily with an elaborate courtship display. The male circles around the female and the pair often spiral around an object and change color. The seahorse is the only creature where the male has a true reversed pregnancy. The female transfers her eggs to the male and he self-fertilizes in his pouch. Contractions during birth can last up to twelve hours.
The Greeks and Romans believed the seahorse was an attribute of the sea god Neptune/Poseidon. Ancient Europeans believed that the seahorse supplied safe passage and protection to the souls of deceased sailors to the underworld. The Chinese believed that the seahorse was a type of sea dragon, they were revered for their power and thought to be good luck.
All my pieces are food safe and areas with metallic overglaze can come into contact with food and drink, but this piece is NOT microwave safe. As with any metallic surface, they could cause sparks. Avoid hard scrubbing when washing because of the possibility of scraping off the thin layer of silver overglaze, it is best to treat these pieces as you would fine china. Although silver overglaze will take repeated washings in a dishwasher, it will eventually wear away, so please hand wash.
This design is part of an open edition collection. The piece pictured may not necessarily be the piece you receive. As with most handmade work slight variations are natural.
